A woman shot outside a New Germany, N.S., grocery store on Wednesday has died in a Halifax hospital. (CBC)A woman shot outside a grocery store in New Germany on Wednesday has died, Nova Scotia RCMP say.

The RCMP have confirmed the victim was Christina Mae Eisnor, 43, of Hemford, N.S. She died in a Halifax hospital at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The man suspected of shooting her, then turning the gun on himself, is still in a Halifax hospital in critical condition.

Shots were fired outside Barry's Freshmart, about 120 kilometres west of Halifax, just before 1 p.m.

"The investigators are still at the scene and sifting through the evidence and speaking with witnesses and so on and so forth," he said.

"The matter is very much still under investigation. Unfortunately, at this time, we are not able to disclose any more information on this particular case."

Witnesses in New Germany say the victim and the alleged shooter were a couple who had recently split. RCMP have not confirmed those accounts.

Kakonyi said he expects investigators will work quickly and carefully on the case.

"It is a very tight-knit, small community, and everyone knows their neighbours," Kakonyi said. "This is going to be extremely traumatic for the people in that community."

Canada Day celebrations went ahead in New Germany on Thursday, but the mood was sombre as word of Eisnor's death spread.

'It's a tangled web as you reach out and see everybody down the line," said local resident Jesse Beck. "In a small community, you know, we knew the people involved and all the connecting people to the both of them, so it's really hard."

The flag at the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, where Eisnor worked part time, was lowered in her honour.
