The Halifax International Airport Authority said on Thursday that its budget remains in the black even though passenger traffic decreased by 4.5 per cent in the most recent fiscal year.

The authority, which runs Halifax Stanfield International Airport, reported a $3.3-million surplus at its annual meeting.

Tom Ruth, the authority's president, said total revenue grew to $62.1 million in 2009, up from $54.4 million the previous year.

He said the authority invested $63.6 million in airport improvements last year, which included the opening of a five-storey, 2,300-space parking area.

In 2009, overall passenger traffic decreased by 4.5 per cent to 3,417,164 passengers, compared to the record set in 2008 of 3,578,931.
