Two more farmers' markets are due to spring up in the Halifax area.

A group of 40 vendors will stay behind at Keith's Brewery when the Halifax Farmers' Market moves to its new home on the waterfront.

Austin Mannette, the group's president, said there are higher table fees and longer hours at the new Seaport location.

"I feel Halifax will profit from two markets and there is enough business for two markets," said Mannette, who sells plants.

The market on Lower Water Street is currently open only on Saturdays. The new site next to Pier 21 is set to launch at the end of July, and be open six days a week.

Unlike the cramped quarters at the Brewery, the Seaport location is designed to be an open and spacious environment, with space for 200 vendors. It will also have its own parking lot.

Norbert Kungl, chairman of the board for the Seaport market, said he doesn't believe there is enough business for two markets.

"What are you going to do as a customer? And parking is an issue at the old market, and you have five stops to make on one place and one at the other place," said Kungl.

Across the harbour, the Dartmouth Crossing retail park plans to offer its own farmers' market on Friday afternoons, starting at the end of May.

Ann-Louise McKinnon, Dartmouth Crossing general manager, said it will be a seasonal market, open rain or shine, with vendors under tents in a gravel lot.

"It just gives that extra opportunity for those that want to buy local that really don't have it readily accessible," she said.

The farmers' market at Alderney Landing on the Dartmouth waterfront is open on Saturday mornings.
