Ashiqur Rahman now faces an additional manslaughter charge in the death of his seven-week-old daughter. (CBC)The parents of a seven-week-old baby girl who died in a Halifax hospital last July, are now facing manslaughter charges in her death.
Jane Gomes and Ashiqur Rahman — both 23 at the time of the baby's death — were charged with aggravated assault shortly after their daughter was rushed to the IWK Health Centre with life-threatening injuries.
The baby, named Aurora Breakthrough, died on July 27 after spending four days in critical care.
The infant's death has now been declared a homicide and her parents face additional charges, said Halifax Regional Police Const. Brian Palmeter.
"Originally we didn't have the results of the autopsy and that information has since come in," he said Tuesday.
Gomes faces two manslaughter-related charges: failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence resulting in the death of the baby.
Rahman has also been charged with manslaughter.
"Essentially what we're alleging is that the father is responsible directly for the death of the baby, whereas the mother, in this case, for lack of a better explanation, had a duty to do certain things which she didn't do and as a result of her failure to do certain things … resulted in the baby's death," said Palmeter.
Both have pleaded not guilty to the aggravated assault charges. They have been at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth, N.S., since their arrests.
They are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Wednesday.
