Joel Plaskett's latest album is called Three, but the Nova Scotian singer-songwriter more than doubled that at the East Coast Music Awards in Sydney, N.S., on Sunday night, capping four days of events celebrating Atlantic Canadian music.

Dartmouth-based Plaskett was the evening's big winner, taking home awards for entertainer of the year, best recording, pop recording and male solo recording for Three, as well as for best single and songwriter of the year for the track Through & Through & Through.

The six awards Plaskett won Sunday join the producer of the year trophy he earned Friday at an ECMA industry awards brunch.

Rising star Catherine MacLellan was also a multiple ECMA winner, with the P.E.I. singer-songwriter's third album Water in the Ground honoured as female solo recording and folk recording of the year.

Also taking home a pair of trophies were Halifax indie rockers In-Flight Safety — who won group recording and alternative recording of the year for We Are an Empire, My Dear — and Moncton hard rock quartet The Motorleague, who snagged the loud recording of the year category for the album Black Noise as well as the fan's choice video of the year prize for Hymn for the Newly Departed.

Other winners included:

  • Rising star recording: Where I Need To Be, Kim Wempe.
  • Video: Throw Me to the Rats, The Tom Fun Orchestra (directed by Alasdair Brotherston and Jock Mooney).
  • Aboriginal recording: Reborn, Forever.
  • Bluegrass recording: ZOOT!, The Grass Mountain Hobos.

The evening's celebrations included a tribute to a host of important Cape Breton recording artists. The Rankin Family was awarded the Director's Special Achievement Award for their contribution to the national and international music industry.

Organizers also recognized songwriter and musician Scotty Turner, posthumous winner of the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award, and musical duo Cornelia and (the late) Billy MacLeod, winners of the Stompin' Tom Award.

The 2011 East Coast Music Association Festival, Conference and Awards moves to Charlottetown, with next year's event slated for April 14-17.
