The federal government will contribute up to $10 million for a new civic centre in Truro, N.S., Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Thursday.

The Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre is to be completed by mid-2012

The $47.5-million centre will house an NHL-sized rink, a three-lane walking track and a fitness centre. It will also have an aquatic centre with an eight-lane swimming pool.

Harper said Ottawa will put money into the project through the Building Canada Fund.

“Today I’m pleased to announce that the government of Canada is investing to help make the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre a reality,” Harper said on a visit to Truro. “This modern facility will feature an NHL–sized ice surface, with seating for 3,200 spectators to cheer on Truro’s future draft picks.”

The Nova Scotia government will contribute $9.52 million to the project, while about $28 million will flow from the Town of Truro, the County of Colchester and corporate and community fundraising.

Harper said the project will create jobs, boost physical fitness and generate sports revenue in the area.
