A benefit concert will be held in Halifax next month for the people of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Halifax for Haiti will be held on Feb. 8 at the Metro Centre, said Brookes Diamond, of Brookes Diamond Productions.
It will feature DRUM! and other East Coast performers, yet to be announced.
The majority of proceeds will go to the Red Cross, said Diamond, who announced the concert on Friday.
He said he and his wife were watching the news about Tuesday's devastating earthquake when they got the idea.
'Fiona and I...saw this complete disaster and right away we just knew — we have to do something.'—Brookes Diamond, Brookes Diamond Productions
"It was very straightforward. It was the 10 o'clock news a few nights ago. Fiona and I were watching it and saw this complete disaster and right away we just knew — we have to do something. Went to bed with that feeling and woke up and the feeling was still there and so we got to work on it."
Tickets are $20 and will go on sale Tuesday.
Diamond hopes the concert will be a sellout. People in the region are known for their generosity, he said.
"If you went down to the World Trade [and Convention] Centre, or go down to the Cunard Centre and look at what those halls are doing — dinners that are raising money for something, and it's going on all the time. We have an incredible community of givers. It's a wonderful thing to see."
The death toll from the 7.0 magnitude quake that devastated Port-au-Prince could reach 200,000, the Haitian government said Friday.
At least 300,000 people are estimated to be homeless.
Six Canadians had been confirmed dead, 13 are listed as injured and more than 1,400 remain unaccounted for.
