Const. Tony Carlisle was killed Wednesday in an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway near Truro, N.S. (Halifax Regional Police)More than 200 uniformed officers with the Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP attended the funeral of Const. Tony Carlisle on Saturday afternoon in Halifax.
Carlisle, 41, died Wednesday morning when his minivan crossed the centre line on Highway 104 and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer near Truro, N.S. He was off-duty at the time.
During the funeral at the crowded St. Agnes Church, Carlisle was remembered as a dedicated police officer of 15 years, a husband and father of four, and the coach of the Brookfield Elks Junior B hockey team.
"I was the sergeant who hired Tony back in the early days, so he was a gregarious kind of guy, always with a smile. Loved policing, loved working in his community, but I'd have to say hockey was his passion," Halifax police Chief Frank Beazley said.
The force is still reeling from Carlisle's death, he said.
"It's just not normal for us to have these types of things. It was an off-duty car accident, but that doesn't happen that often, so it's shocking. The membership's been really in a state of shock now for a number of days and they're going to be a while getting over it because Const. Carlisle was very popular amongst the rank and file."
Investigators don't know why Carlisle veered into the wrong lane just before the crash. He was driving the van as part of his work with the hockey team, officials said.
Members of the hockey team and the mayor also attended Saturday's service.
