A Halifax couple has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault charges in the death of their seven-week-old daughter.
Jane Gomes, 23, and Ashiqur Rahman, 24, entered the pleas on Monday in Halifax provincial court. Their lawyers said the pair will go to trial on the charges.
The couple's baby girl, Aurora Breakthrough, died July 27 after being admitted to the IWK Health Centre four days earlier with life-threatening injuries.
Defence lawyer Peter Mancici, who is representing Gomes, said his client has been in custody for 4½ months and would like to see things progress.
"She's been in custody for some time and been patient but at this point, things need to start moving in one direction or another," he said.
Gomes and Rahman, who are in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, will return to court on Dec. 22 to set dates for a trial.
