A big-box bookstore has made a last-minute decision to close on Remembrance Day.
Chapters/Indigo was planning to open its Nova Scotia stores Wednesday. However, the company did an about-face Tuesday evening after receiving a query from CBC News.
A spokesperson at company headquarters announced the decision in an email.
"In Nova Scotia, the Remembrance Day Act recognizes the valour of soldiers and veterans, and our stores will be closed in Nova Scotia in accordance to the act," the email states.
Nova Scotia's long military history is reflected in a strict Remembrance Day Act, which requires all retail stores with more than three employees to close on Nov. 11. Violators face a fine of up to $15,000.
Korean War veteran Joseph Guidry does not approve of book browsing on Nov. 11.
"They shouldn't open because everything is supposed to be closed on Remembrance Day," Guidry said.
Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly had been hoping Chapters/Indigo would have a change of heart. He said he feels the same as Guidry about Remembrance Day.
"It is a time of reflection, a time of support for the vets and a time to say thank-you for fighting for our freedom," Kelly said.
Several Remembrance Day ceremonies are being held Wednesday throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality, including at the Grand Parade in downtown Halifax.
