Jane Gomes, 23, is led into Halifax courthouse on Wednesday. She is charged with the aggravated assault of her infant daughter, who died in hospital in Halifax on Monday. (CBC) Ashiqur Rahman and Jane Gomes, whose baby girl died in a Halifax hospital earlier this week, will remain in custody until their bail hearing in two weeks.
Rahman and Gomes, both 23, face charges of aggravated assault. They chose separate lawyers to represent them in court.
The couple were taken to the courthouse in Halifax but were not required to appear in front of a judge in provincial court Wednesday. Instead, they remained in cells downstairs while lawyers spoke on their behalf.
Ashiqur Rahman, 23, also charged, is the father of the deceased infant. (CBC) John Black represents Rahman.
"He's lost an infant child. He's in jail. He's out of contact with his partner, who's also in jail." Black told CBC News on Wednesday. "It's a difficult time,"
Their seven-week-old daughter, Aurora Breakthrough, died Monday night after spending four days in critical care at the IWK Health Centre.
The baby was rushed to the children's hospital last Thursday evening from a home on Halifax's Gottingen Street. Paramedics suspected child abuse and called police.
The charges against Rahman and Gomes, both former students of Acadia University, have not been upgraded since the death.
"The charges that are currently before the court are aggravated assault and until the investigation is concluded it's premature to comment on what other charges could be laid," Crown Attorney Denise Smith told CBC News on Wednesday.
A police investigation into the infant’s death could take months. Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
The parents will remain at the Burnside Correctional Facility in Dartmouth, N.S., until their bail hearing Aug. 12.
