The infant was rushed to hospital from an upstairs apartment on Gottigen Street on Thursday. (CBC)An investigation into the death of a seven-week-old baby continues as her parents remain in custody, charged with aggravated assault.
The little girl died Monday night at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, where she had spent the last four days with her injuries.
"Given the baby’s death, the severity of the situation has increased for police," Halifax Regional Police said in a release.
Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy. They plan to consult with the medical examiner and Crown prosecutors before deciding whether charges against the child's parents will be upgraded.
Ashiqur Rahman and Jane Gomes, both 23 and former students of Acadia University, are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court Wednesday.
The baby was rushed to the children's hospital Thursday evening from a home on Halifax's Gottingen Street.
Paramedics suspected they were dealing with a case of child abuse and called police, a police spokeswoman has said.
Bob Trenaman, the couple's landlord, said a public health nurse visited the family two or three times a week.
"I think the difficult thing was that they were trying to do it on their own and probably the clinic or the nurse would have felt that, and that's why there was a regular visit," he said.
They lived in a cramped quarters with a double and a single bed in a room. On the single bed lay a stuffed animal, some baby books and a pamphlet entitled: Do you have a new baby? Do you need extra help and support?
