The tall ships have paraded out of Halifax.

Thousands of people gathered along the waterfront Monday to watch the ships sail out of the harbour, as the Halifax chapter of the Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival 2009 came to an end.

About 40 ships sailed around Georges Island and out toward the open ocean.

Most of the ships arrived July 16, bringing more than 1,500 crewmembers to the city. Despite the poor weather for part of the weekend, organizers expect that the event attracted the 800,000 visitors they had predicted.

Many of the tall ships are headed to smaller ports around Nova Scotia, including Port Hawkesbury, Sydney, Pictou and Pugwash.

Sixteen ships are bound for Ireland for the final leg of an international race.
