Nova Scotia's new NDP government is hiking tobacco taxes — a move the previous Progressive Conservative government tried before it collapsed last month.

Effective midnight Monday, a carton of cigarettes will cost about $10 more. The province says the increase will generate about $21 million in revenue.

Finance Minister Graham Steele says the move will also help bring down smoking rates.

The Tories included a tobacco tax hike in their budget last month. On the day the price was due to go up, the government collapsed on a financial bill and the budget died.

There was some confusion about tobacco prices as a result.

By the time the province alerted wholesalers that the tax hike wasn't going through, some retailers had already started changing prices on their inventory.

The NDP government also announced Monday that there will be a contribution increase to the pension plan for public employees to address a long-term shortfall.
