Tenants say they were attacked and their townhouse trashed after a birthday party advertised on Facebook got out of hand. (CBC)Tenants at a townhouse in Halifax said they were attacked and their place was trashed when a birthday party they threw for a roommate got out of control on Saturday night.
The six tenants living at the townhouse, located on Duncan Street in the city’s west end, said the partygoers turned on them when they tried to kick the group out of their place.
Two of the tenants were stabbed while the other four suffered fractures, cuts and bruises in the attack.
The rental unit suffered thousands of dollars worth of damage. More than half a dozen walls were smashed in and ripped apart.
Party was advertised on Facebook
The event started out as a birthday party for Jillian Warner, one of the six tenants living in the townhouse. Warner said she invited a friend who is also disc jockey.
"Once he heard about the party, he said, 'I can deejay for you and I'll do it for free,' " Warner told CBC News on Monday. "I was like, 'Oh, cool, a deejay' — because it was my birthday party."
'My father got a message saying come to my party. And so did the paramedics. They heard about it, too.'—Andrew Zwicker
The deejay then spread word about the party using Facebook, the tenants said. Approximately 1,000 people with accounts on the social networking website were invited. A link to Google Maps was provided giving directions to the townhouse.
"My father got a message saying to come to my party," said Andrew Zwicker, one of the tenants. "And so did the paramedics. They heard about it, too."
The group of roommates said between 200 and 400 people they didn’t know crammed into their place on Saturday night. When the party got out of hand, the crowd turned on the tenants when they asked the revellers to leave.
"I tried to get to [the deejay] to tell him, 'Turn down the music, give me the microphone — everyone's getting out,' " Zwicker said.
One tenant said a partygoer's face ended up smashed into a wall. Another tenant was nearly pinned underneath a bedroom door when some people pushed the door loose from its hinges. Splatters of blood remained on the door on Monday.
The party finally ended when more than a dozen police cars arrived at the townhouse.
"They wouldn't even let us out of the basement for the first little while," Warner said. "A girl was pushed down the stairs and she was lying on the ground right there, screaming. Even people we didn't know were getting messed up."
Townhouse known as a party place
Brad Gaetz, a neighbour, said the townhouse has a reputation as a party place.
"You know, it's a young people's residence, and young people like to have fun," Gaetz said. "This is a university town, but they have problems with some parties that get out of hand."
The six tenants refused to allow their landlord in to the townhouse on Monday without 48 hours' notice. They locked him out in order to give themselves a chance to clean up the place.
However, by suppertime the landlord had returned, and he called the police when the tenants again refused him entry to the premises. Police then escorted the landlord inside the townhouse.
According to one of the tenants, the landlord looked through the house and left without saying a word to them.
Police have not laid any charges in connection with the house party.
