Three farmers' markets in the Maritimes have been recognized as among the top 10 in the country by Canadian Geographic magazine.
The magazine published its list of the top 10 farmers' markets in its May 2009 edition.
The Halifax Farmers’ Market, the Boyce Farmers’ Market in Fredericton and the Charlottetown Farmers' Market made it on the list.
Cookbook author Anita Stewart compiled the list for Canadian Geographic.
Stewart, a champion of eating local foods, said farmers' markets play a big role in finding the best local food.
“When I go to an area, if I want to eat locally, this is how to do the basic research,” Stewart told CBC News on Saturday. “I'll go to the market and see what's there, and then if I go to a restaurant, I'll know what to order on the menu,” she said.
Paul Stapleton, president of the Boyce Farmers' Market, was thrilled with the recognition.
“We couldn’t afford to buy that kind of advertising for the market to be written up as one of the top 10 in the country in a magazine that has such a wide circulation,” Stapleton said.
Stapleton said an advisory board will be organized to look at ways to make the farmers' market in Fredericton even better.
