Drivers in Nova Scotia can now buy gas for less than $1 a litre.

The government dropped regulated pump prices overnight, marking the first time gas has been under the $1 mark since February 2007.

The minimum price of regular unleaded gas in Halifax is now 97 cents, down from $1.028. In Cape Breton, the new price is 98.9 cents.

New Brunswick and P.E.I. dropped their pump prices to below $1 a litre earlier this week.

Nova Scotia sets gas prices at 12:01 a.m. every Friday. However, it can interrupt the cycle to lower or raise prices if the world market price swings dramatically.

The government has stepped in to disrupt the cycle several times this fall.
