With a week to go before voting day, federal election officials are still looking for people to work at polling stations in four of Nova Scotia's 11 ridings.
Elections Canada says workers are scarce in Halifax, Halifax West, Kings-Hants and Sackville-Eastern Shore.
Spokesman Dana Doiron said more workers are required this election because of the requirement for voters to produce identification.
"That requires us to have additional people on hand — information officers and others — so that we don't have long lineups and the requirement for ID doesn't slow the process down and make it inconvenient for the voters," he said Monday.
Voters are required to show proof of who they are and where they live, such as a driver's licence.
They can also show two pieces of identification that include their name and address, such as a health card and bank statement. The third option is to swear an oath and be vouched for by a registered voter.
The problem of finding workers is compounded by the fact Oct. 14 is the same day as the advance poll for Nova Scotia's provincewide municipal elections.
Doiron said anyone interested in working must be a Canadian citizen and live in that particular riding.
