A 70-year-old pilot is safe after his ultralight smashed into trees near Berwick, N.S., on Thursday.
The RCMP say the pilot from Mahone Bay was on his first flight in the small aircraft when the engine suddenly quit.
"Once it reached about 500 feet [152 metres], the pilot said the engine shut off," said Const. Les Kakonyi of Kings District RCMP.
"He tried to manoeuvre the plane so he could land it, but obviously fell short of the runway and the plane crashed in a stand of trees."
The aircraft ended up in a farmer's field about a kilometre west of Berwick.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene, but Kakonyi said the pilot was not seriously hurt and was not taken to a hospital. There was no one else on board.
Kakonyi said the pilot, whose name has not been released, has 45 years of flight experience.
He said firefighters collected some fuel that had leaked.
