Premier Rodney MacDonald said Nova Scotians can best deal with skyrocketing gas prices by taking public transit or switching to fuel-efficient cars.

"The most important thing that we as a government can do, and all Nova Scotians can do, is to purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles and to take up the opportunity for transit," he said Friday.

MacDonald said there's little his government can do about the worldwide surge in fuel prices.

He rejected Liberal calls for a cut to the provincial tax on gas, saying Nova Scotia needs the revenue for road improvements. He also said he won't scrap gas price regulation.

MacDonald said his government is buying more energy-efficient vehicles to reduce its consumption of gas.

The price of gas in the Halifax region has topped $1.33 a litre. The record high price of $1.38.9 was set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
