The Nova Scotia government has hired a local consulting firm to address public and industry concerns about poor quality construction in new homes and condominiums.
Service Nova Scotia Minister Jamie Muir said the decision follows numerous complaints from people in the Halifax area who are unhappy with the condos they bought.
"The home-building industry itself has been in to see government about improving standards for those who build houses, and in the interests of consumer protection," Muir said Monday.
There are many reputable contractors who build first-rate condos. Muir said, but there have been problems.
"Unfortunately, where there are problems, those are the ones that become best known," he said.
The contract was awarded last week to Novus Consulting Group Ltd., in partnership with Costello Fitt Ltd., of Chester, N.S. The first stage of the study will research best building practices. The consultants will also seek targeted input to help identify issues and concerns.
Consultations are expected to take place in May and will be advertised to make sure everyone has an opportunity to comment.
The consultants' homeowner protection review report and recommendations will be ready by summer.
The $87,000 contract was awarded through government tender.
