The Chapel Island First Nation in Cape Breton will operate without a chief for the next six months.

The band council has decided to forgo a byelection to fill the position left vacant because of Wilbert Marshall's sexual-assault conviction.

The plan is to holdĀ a general election later this year.

"Financially, it's not in the best interests to have two elections," said band councillor Helen Doyle.

Marshall was automatically removed as leader last week after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in the spring of 2006. He will be sentenced in March.

The call for nominations for chief and five councillors goes out in May. Usually, 10 or 15 people run for the top position. Marshall can run if he chooses.

Voting is scheduled for early July, with the new council taking office in August.
