A blaze destroyed a nearly century-old curling club in the town of Windsor, N.S. late Tuesday afternoon.
At its peak, up to 150 firefighters from eight fire departments battled the fire at the old wooden building.
But two hours after the blaze broke out around 4 p.m., all that was left was the charred remains of the Windsor Curling Club.
Windsor Fire Department Chief Fred Fox said the fire is suspicious, but there is no word yet on the cause.
Wanda Donelle, who used to run the women's curling club at the rink, said the club was gearing up to celebrate its centennial.
"It was a very vibrant club," she said. "So, the loss of this club is devastating to the club membership current and past and to the town of Windsor."
The fire also destroyed a private three-car garage next door.
Witnesses said that at one point the building was engulfed in flames shooting at least 50 feet in the air. A thick black smoke hung over the town for several hours.
Jim Wilson, who curled at the rink for the past 15 years, said he would miss playing at the "nice little club" on weekday nights. "Everybody knew everybody."
Asked what the fire means for the town, he called it a "big loss" and said the town will "probably never see curling out here again."
