About 5,000 customers are without power after a severe thunderstorm hit parts of Nova Scotia early Thursday.

The communities affected include Tatamagouche, River John, New Annan, Truro, Bible Hill, North River, McCallum Settlement and Bass River.

"One of the things about this storm is that as we're out repairing damage, now we're seeing additional damage we didn't know about," said Glennie Langille, a spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power.

Langille said crews are working to restore power by 6 p.m. local time, but if there is more lightning they will have to stop.
