A small Nova Scotia company is credited with helping millions of expatriate Americans vote in the U.S. mid-term elections last November.
Seven million Americans almost didn't get a chance to vote when an IT company backed out of a deal, leaving the Overseas Vote Foundation without a voting system.
Atlantic Webfitters, a little web portal company from Mount Uniacke, stepped in and set up a new site quickly.
“It was a rescue operation,” said founder Gifford Watkins. “They were going to be extinct if they didn't help people register.”
Watkins and his small team set up an online gateway page that allowed Americans outside the United States access to register to vote.
Users were asked to rate the service, and this month Watkins heard the feedback was positive. This opens the door for the company to do similar projects in states that were impressed with the site.
“He has this way of bringing technology to people and making it accessible,” said Susan Dzieduszycka-Suinat, executive director of the Overseas Vote Foundation.
