Police investigating an unsolved double murder in East Preston, N.S., say a march on Saturday resulted in more tips in the case.

More than 300 people took part in the trek from East Preston Recreation Centre to Graham Creighton Junior High School, a march organized in the aftermath of last month's shooting outside a local party house.

Martaze Provo, 25, and Brandon Beals, 21, died after they were shot outside a house on Upper Partridge Road at about 5 a.m. on Dec. 10. Two others were injured.

So far no one has been arrested. RCMP say witnesses and the two survivors have been reluctant to co-operate in the investigation.

But thanks to the march, police say they have new leads.

"The investigators have to take all this information and go out and act upon it," said Const. Joe Taplin.

At the rally, speakers from the predominantly black neighbourhoods of East Preston, North Preston and Cherry Brook urged the communities to work together to keep the local youth out of trouble.

The point of the march wasn't to solve the shootings, said organizer Spencer Colley, but if people are talking, that's a good start.

Several marchers wore T-shirts with images of Beals and Provo, who died in the shooting Dec. 10. Several marchers wore T-shirts with images of Beals and Provo, who died in the shooting Dec. 10.

"I think that that's the type of thing that we need," said Colley, chair of the East Preston Ratepayers Association and a retired police officer.

"We didn't do it for the sake of making people talk. We just wanted the people who were involved in what happened to know that we were concerned."

To Colley, the fact that this case is still open tells him there's a problem in his community.

Taplin said investigators are considering all options when it comes to finding the killers, including a reward for information.
