Two people in New Waterford face charges after an angry mob visited homes of people they believed were involved in a death that investigators say didn't involve foul play.

More than 100 people took to the town streets on Monday, convinced that police were mishandling the death of Harry Corbett.

Corbett, 25, was found dead in a wooded area near the Nova Scotia town on Friday.

An autopsy was performed over the weekend in Halifax. Cape Breton Regional Police have not released the cause of death, but have ruled out foul play.

Police say rumours were circulating in the Cape Breton community that Corbett had been assaulted and there were witnesses who didn't help him.

The rumours are simply not true, police say, but residents decided to take matters in their own hands and visited the homes of people they believe were connected to Corbett's death.

"What we've got is a kind of vigilante situation," said associate police chief Dave Wilson, one of 20 officers called to disperse the crowd.

The crowd dispersed by 8:30 p.m.

Two people were arrested Monday night and face charges of disturbing the peace and obstruction of justice.
