A third bridge or even a tunnel could be in the works for Halifax harbour, a report said Wednesday.

Steve Snider, CEO of the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission, told the Halifax Chronicle-Herald that the commission has already held initial talks with municipal officials and expects a formal planning process to begin early in 2007.

"We're not saying we need the additional capacity now," Snider told the newspaper. "We're saying the time to start strategic planning is now."

The first big step is to do a comprehensive needs assessment, which could be a 10-year process, he added.

The commission expects there will be more than 32 million crossings this year over the Macdonald and MacKay bridges, and believes the volume will continue to increase.

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge opened on April 2, 1955, connecting central Halifax and Dartmouth. The A. Murray MacKay Bridge, farther north, opened on July 10, 1970.

Darmouth and Halifax are also connected by a ferry.
