Cecil Clarke, a mayoral candidate for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, has temporarily shut down his campaign's Facebook page after a spam attack.

Thousands of spammed messages and posts flooded the Elect Cecil Clarke Facebook page on Sunday evening.

Clarke's office said it was impossible for volunteers to remove the spam in a timely fashion, so the page was taken down early Monday morning.

"This certainly seems like another attempt to portray me and my team in a negative light," Clarke said in a statement.

"As I have said all along, underhanded tactics have no place in this campaign. It's unfortunate and regrettable that some people choose to direct their energies in this way, rather than participating in the political process in an open, honest and transparent manner."

Clarke said the Facebook page will be reactivated when the spam problem has been solved.
