Two Halifax bars will be opening early during parts of the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia.
The semi-finals start January 3. The finals will be played January 5.
Downtown bar, Oasis Pub and Eatery, will be opening at 5:30 a.m. so that hockey fans can come in and watch the games. A number of Boston Pizza locations will also be opening early and serving a breakfast special.
Oasis has been granted a permit to serve alcohol early in the morning for those inclined to toast the world's top junior hockey players.
There is a 10 hour time difference between Halifax and Ufa.
Adam Lardner, who works at Oasis, said the world juniors gives hockey fans something to cheer about.
"There hasn't been any NHL this year, so we really need something to focus on as hockey fans. This is a huge opportunity to do so. This is a big tournament. A lot of really big up and coming hockey players are involved," he said.
Two Halifax Mooseheads players, Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin are playing for Team Canada.
Lardner said having local stars playing in the tournament is adding interest from people who want to watch the games in sports bars.
