People are allowed back into the Mayflower Mall in Sydney, N.S. after police temporarily evacuated the building Wednesday afternoon.

Cape Breton Regional Police received a 911 call that a man was in the mall with a handgun and explosives. He had allegedly  threatened to shoot police officers and to detonate the explosives.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 1 p.m. and ordered people in the mall to leave. Some employees were advised to lock themselves inside their stores.

Police said the suspect was never seen in the mall.

The CBC's Gary Mansfield said there was an officer posted at every entrance blocking people from entering the mall.

Police are still investigating.
