Nova Scotia's deputy minister of business is resigning so she can focus on recovering from a concussion suffered last fall, according to a news release from the province.

Catherine Woodman is resigning as deputy minister of Nova Scotia's Department of Business. (

The province said Catherine Woodman submitted her resignation to the premier, effective Friday. It has been accepted by Premier Stephen McNeil.

The Department of Business replaced the Department of Economic and Rural Development, which was scrapped last April.

The premier said in the release that Woodman helped establish the new department and "helped to lay the foundation for private-sector growth in Nova Scotia.

"I thank her for her contributions and her long-standing commitment to public service and the betterment of this province."

The current managing director with the Business Department, M.J. MacDonald, will take over for Woodman until a permanent replacement is named.
