More money is being devoted to roads in Port Hawkesbury's budget.

Port Hawkesbury town council passed its annual operating budget Tuesday night.

While the commercial tax rate has not changed, there will be an increase in residential taxes which will cost the average household an extra $30 for the year.

"We wish we could have held the line for both of our tax rates, but looking at the state of our roads, I think it was the wise thing to do to try to be future-forward and get our roads in better shape," said Coun. Brenda Chisholm-Beaton.

The extra tax money and gas tax revenue will be devoted to $175,000 worth of street repairs, which is triple what was spent last year.

The town's total budget is $7.8 million.
