Halifax RCMP are investigating a possible case of impaired driving after a car was found flipped onto its roof and abandoned early Sunday on Peggys Cove Road.

RCMP said it appears the car hit a rocky embankment and was then thrown back onto the roadway.

Staff Sgt. Peter Ferguson said police and a canine unit tracked a blood trail leading from the scene, through the woods, to a home on Boutiliers Cove Road. There they found an 18-year-old man whom they suspected had been driving impaired when the car crashed.

"According to someone that was interviewed at his home, he did walk into his home at approximately 4:15 a.m., so we're of the opinion — based on how long it took the police service dog and the handler to do the track — that suspect probably took approximately 30 to 45 minutes to walk home," he said.

Ferguson said evidence of alcohol was found inside the car. The suspect, who suffered minor injuries, was taken into police custody to have his blood alcohol level tested.
