Halifax police seized a handgun Friday night and arrested several people after breaking up a gathering inside a vacant apartment unit in the Gottingen Street area.

At around 10:15 p.m. officers were called to a building on Buddy Day Street, off Gottingen Street.

When police arrived they saw several people inside and called the owner of the building to confirm no one was supposed to be there.

Then, Sgt. Greg Robertson said police called for backup.

"It's always safe to have additional units respond to cover off both ends of the residence and that was the decision that was made — to have additional resources brought in so we could arrest people as they fled the residence," said Robertson.

Seven people were arrested, only two remained in police custody Saturday morning. The two face break and enter charges. It's not clear who owns the seized handgun.
