A nasty mix of weather is in store for Nova Scotia today.

Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for the province. As temperatures drop Friday afternoon, the morning rain will turn to freezing rain mixed with ice pellets and then to snow tonight.

The northern areas of Nova Scotia are expected to get the highest snowfall amounts, possibly exceeding 30 centimetres.

"The combination of snow and freezing rain is the main concern for the areas from northwestern Cape Breton down through Pictou County and into the Annapolis Valley," Environment Canada says.

Rapidly accumulating snow, and quickly changing and deteriorating weather conditions are expected to make travel difficult with highways, roads, walkways and parking lots becoming icy and slippery. Ice build-up may also cause tree branches to break, the weather forecast says.

Being prepared

Nova Scotia Power says it is preparing for the freezing rain, wet snow and has activated its emergency operations centre in Ragged Lake. In a statement released Friday afternoon, the utility says crews and trucks are stationed around the province.

Snow and ice buildup on electrical equipment and trees and trees or branches falling onto power lines may cause outages, it says.

"We're moving crews and trucks into position around the province in advance of this storm, so we'll be prepared to respond to any outages," said Paul Casey, NSP transmission and distribution director.

Halifax is implementing an overnight parking ban, starting Saturday at 1 a.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. to allow crews to clear the snow and ice.

The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board has cancelled classes for the day. School is also cancelled in Colchester, Cumberland and Pictou counties.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled its 11:45 p.m. ferry sailings from North Sydney and Port aux Basques.

Flights from Halifax Stanfield International Airport were operating on schedule early Friday morning. However, airlines were warning travellers to check arrivals and departures before leaving for the airport.
