Missing Northumberland Strait canoeist isn't wearing lifejacket
Underwater recovery team and local fisherman searching for 33-year-old man
An underwater recovery team of six divers is assisting local fishermen in the search for a 33-year-old man in the Northumberland Strait, near Bayfield in Antigonish County.
"Of course, our hope is to find him alive as soon as we can," said RCMP Sgt. Al LeBlanc.
The man was reported missing Sunday at about 5.30 p.m.
The search and rescue centre in Halifax reported an overturned canoe. Only one of the two people in the canoe made it to shore.
Neither was wearing a lifejacket and there were no lifejackets on board the canoe, said LeBlanc.
On Monday police said a local fishing boat recovered the boat.
The RCMP, paramedics and a helicopter all helped in the search Sunday night.
