The Maritime Merchant, a Cape Breton community paper, has fallen victim to internet competition and has put out its final issue.

The Merchant operated for 26 years as a source for people buying and selling goods and services.

Owner Larry Buck says the paper couldn't compete with Kijiji, eBay and Craigslist.

But he says he's proud the Merchant was a big employer, particularly in the late-1990s to mid-2000s.

"At our peak employment, we had 13 full-time employees and six part-time employees. And all those people were the main breadwinners of the family," he said.

His two remaining employees have found full-time work, says Buck.

The Maritime Merchant building has been sold to a nearby car dealership.
