A 79-year-old fisherman from Lunenburg County is dead after he failed to return home overnight, according to Nova Scotia RCMP.

Police said a search for the man in South Stonehurst, near Blue Rocks, ended at about 5:15 a.m. on Monday when the man's body was found on the shoreline near his nine-metre fishing boat.

The fisherman was spotted out in his boat breaking ice in Rock Lane Cove on Sunday but did not make it home, reported the CBC's Phonse Jessome.

Fishermen in the area said ice moved into the cove during the last storm and they have to break it up or risk being trapped on shore for the rest of the fishing season.

The RCMP called the Joint Search and Rescue Centre at about 1:15 a.m. to report the missing man. Police said several fire departments were called in and it was a firefighter who found the man.

Police said they don't suspect foul play.

The man's name hasn’t been released.
