A Dartmouth man has been found not guilty of second-degree murder in a 2009 shooting incident in East Preston, N.S.

Steven Maurice Colley, 52, was acquitted on Wednesday. He had been charged with the murder of Andre Slawter, 20, who died after a shooting incident on Jan. 22, 2009.

That day, RCMP were called to Brian Street after someone reported hearing gunshots and found Slawter dead in the passenger seat of a car. His cousin, Tywan Slawter, was found sitting in the driver's seat suffering from minor injuries.

Colley was also charged with the attempted murder of Tywan Slawter, but on Wednesday he was acquitted of that charge as well, the Chronicle Herald reported.

According to the Chronicle Herald, Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Kevin Coady ruled that Colley was acting in self-defence because he feared the Slawters were trying to hurt him.
