One person is dead after part of a tractor-trailer crashed into a van on Barrington Street Friday morning, according to Halifax Regional Police.
Officers were called to the A. Murray MacKay Bridge ramp near Africville Road around 7:37 a.m.
Const. Pierre Bourdages said the driver of the van was a man in his 40s.
He said it appears the trailer separated from the cab of the truck as it was travelling southbound. The trailer hit the van, which was heading in the opposite direction. Bourdages said the container crossed the centre line.
More than half of the van was crushed, reported the CBC's Pam Berman.
Barrington Street was closed for several hours on Friday and reopened to traffic just before 3 p.m.
"In a case like this, specifically when there's a tragic accident and someone lost their life, we take all the time that's needed to make sure we understand exactly what happened," said Bourdages.
He said the Department of Transportation is helping with the investigation.
A tow truck was called in to remove the minivan.
