MacKay Bridge paving project begins Friday night
Paving will reduce number of lanes open on weekends
The number of lanes open on the A. Murray MacKay Bridge will be reduced each weekend for the next eight to 10 weeks because Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) is paving the suspended spans of the bridge.
To minimize disruptions, two lanes of the bridge will be open during the work and there will always be one lane open going in either direction.
The lanes will close at 7 p.m. on Friday evenings and reopen at 5:30 a.m. on Mondays. Weather permitting, HHB says the work should be completed by early September.
All four lanes of the MacKay Bridge will be open betwen Monday mornings and Friday evenings.
If the weather is poor, the bridge agency says work will be postponed and all lanes will remain open. On the Macdonald Bridge, the three lanes will remain open as usual throughout the summer.
HHB says the repaving work will help ensure there are no lane closures needed on the MacKay Bridge next summer when the redecking project on the Macdonald Bridge starts.
