Halifax’s Macdonald Bridge is set to undergo major repairs in the next year and preparatory work will mean a full closure of the bridge on July 22 and 23.

The 60-year-old span will be closed to all vehicles from 11 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. If a third night is required the bridge will close 11 p.m. Thursday, July 24 and reopen 5:30 a.m.

The shutdown is needed so workers can survey the bridge. The Halifax Harbour Bridges says for complete accuracy, there can be no traffic on the bridges while the work is being done.

The work could be postponed if wind or weather conditions interfere.

The bike lane and sidewalk will remain open.

The work is related to the Macdonald Bridge redecking project, known as The Big Lift. The first segment is due to be replaced in August 2015.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says the MacKay Bridge will be fully open during this time.
