A charge has been laid in Friday's grisly murder of a 73-year-old man in Lower Sackville, N.S.

Nicolas Edward White, 24, is in custody on a second-degree murder charge.

The accused and the victim lived in the same apartment building at 70 Cobequid Road.

"It's no secret for anybody that lives down there, there was quite a blood trail involved," said Staff Sgt. Peter Ferguson. He added that police are still processing the scene.

Police believe that not long after the homicide, White was trying to break into an apartment in a nearby building.

A bloody trail led officers to a cemetery where the accused was chased down and a weapon found.

Ferguson said it is unclear if the killing was over a dispute among neighbours.

"I honestly don't know and we really have no motive at this time," said Ferguson.

White will appear before a judge on Monday to face the murder charge.

Police are not naming the victim and an autopsy will be conducted on Monday.
