RCMP have arrested a 60-year-old man after a fatal shootingthey are now calling a homicide on Little Tancook Island, just off of Chester, N.S.
Sgt. Al LeBlanc of the Nova Scotia RCMP said the report came in just before 9 a.m.
A 47-year-old man was shot dead. His body was found in a field.
"I can confirm at this time that we are now investigating a homicide and of course the investigation is continuing and we anticipate charges to be laid tomorrow morning," said LeBlanc Tuesday.
LeBlanc said both men live on Little Tancook Island. The men knew each other.
Helen Norve lives in Bridgewater, but her father is at his cottage on the island.
"They were asked to stay in their homes that there had been a shooting and that there was a body at the property next door. Everyone right now is still very tense it was a scary situation, you know where there's not many people on the island to have something like this happen is very out of the ordinary. So everyone is, I think, pretty spooked,” she said.
Witness describes effort to save victim
Kerry Keddy lives in Chester. He watched events unfold from the mainland.
"There was police cars rushing into the village and firetrucks. The LifeFlight [helicopter] landed in the local school soccer field," he said. "Down at the government wharf there was at least five or six police cars, two or three ambulances. [At around 11:20 a.m.] the ferry arrived here, and it appears they’ve taken a suspect off the boat from the island."
Keddy estimates there are 20 to 30 homes on the island, but he said most are seasonal homes.
