Lingan Generating Station evacuated due to hydrogen leak
New Waterford site back to normal after afternoon scare
The Lingan Generating Station near New Waterford, N.S., was evacuated due to a small hydrogen gas leak Monday, say the Cape Breton Regional Police and Nova Scotia Power.
"The plant experienced a leak from the cooling system located outside the plant. We have evacuated the plant as a precaution and emergency responders are on site," Nova Scotia Power told CBC News.
The fire department and a hazardous materials team were dispatched to the plant at about 2:30 p.m. Crews found it was a small leak, so they let it evaporate safely on its own.
Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless compressed gas that can pose a fire and explosion hazard when concentrations exceed four per cent.
