Investigation clears 2 Amherst police officers of criminal wrongdoing
Two Amherst police officers have been cleared of allegations of criminal wrongdoing following an investigation by a neighbouring police force.
Kentville police Chief Mark Mander was asked last spring to look into a complaint by an inmate at the Dorchester Penitentiary.
"I found no basis for any criminal acts in relation to this file," Mander said Thursday.
Patrick Thomas Hawco, from Amherst, filed a complaint under the Police Act against two officers after he was convicted of theft-related charges last year.
Mander wouldn't comment on the allegations against the officers because of concerns for their privacy.
He said he decided to do a criminal investigation, even though it started off as a Police Act investigation. He called this a normal procedure.
"Because the nature of it appeared to be criminal, I decided to do a criminal investigation before the Police Act portion of it," Mander said.
The Police Act investigation into the officers' conduct continues.
