Heritage Walk in Halifax adds touch of history
A south end Halifax trail has new signs highlighting the area’s rich local history.
The multi-use trail has been dubbed the Heritage Walk and runs along Beaufort Avenue, once the exclusive property of the Cunard and Ritchie estates.
Spots of interest near the trail include the Oakland Road dock where a ferry once transported passengers to the other side of the Northwest Arm.
The story of the ferry is told on one of four interpretive panels along the path.
"There are interesting destinations along the trail, and there will be in the future phases, [that] people just wouldn’t know about otherwise," said Mark Poirier, president of Halifax Urban Greenway Association.
The walk is about a kilometre, but there is a vision to expand it to link Point Pleasant Park with Bayers Road.
