Nova Scotia RCMP say students at Brooklyn District Elementary School and West Hants Middle School in Hants County were kept after hours on Tuesday afternoon after a report of a man carrying a gun.

Cpl. Scott MacRae said at around 2:30 p.m., a caller reported seeing a man enter the woods with a gun. The area was secured.

Both schools were put in a so-called hold and secure status, meaning students were kept in the schools and the doors were locked. Only authorized personnel, such as parents, were permitted to enter the buildings.

Brooklyn District Elementary School and West Hants Middle School students were kept in their respective building for about an hour and a half until they were cleared to go home, according to Annapolis Valley Regional School Board spokeswoman Kristen Lloyst.

Police have not found the man but are still monitoring the area.
