Halifax police are investigating after a woman says she was sexually assaulted by a cab driver early Monday morning.

According to investigators, the 39-year-old woman and a friend took a cab from Historic Properties on Lower Water Street to Parkland Drive around 12:30 a.m. She told police when she exited the cab the driver reached out and grabbed her buttocks.

The woman says she told the driver it was inappropriate. He reportedly apologized, refused payment and quickly left.

Police say the driver is described as a white man in his 30s with blond hair, a round face and a medium build.

They say he spoke English with an East European accent.

"It’s important to note that the majority of taxi drivers take pride in providing a safe and accessible method of transportation to citizens. However, as with any service industry, potential for abuse of customers exists," reads the police release.

Police suggest taking note of the roof light and company name, sitting in the back of the cab and checking for the driver's licence.
